Awoniyi faces possible sanctions over religious display despite Forest win at Tottenham

Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi could be subject to disciplinary review following his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s Premier League encounter, Sport360NG reports. 

The forward rounded off an impressive team performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a late goal, calmly finishing from close range after meeting a cross from Neco Williams. The strike marked his second league goal of the campaign, adding to his earlier effort against Brentford in January.

Despite his contribution on the pitch, post-match attention has focused on Awoniyi’s celebration, during which he revealed a religious message reading “God is the greatest.” The striker was also cautioned during the game, and the display may now attract further scrutiny from football authorities.

According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), players are not permitted to display political, religious, or personal messages on their equipment or clothing.

The regulation states that any such breach could lead to sanctions imposed by the competition organisers, national associations, or FIFA.

Awoniyi’s situation has drawn parallels with a previous case involving Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who was warned by the Football Association after writing religious messages on a rainbow armband during a league initiative supporting LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall.

The FA’s handling of similar incidents has previously sparked debate, including criticism from UK politician Neil O’Brien, who questioned perceived inconsistencies in the enforcement of regulations.

Guehi had defended his actions at the time, maintaining that his message was rooted in personal faith and intended to promote inclusivity.

Awoniyi’s case is expected to be reviewed by the relevant authorities, with any potential disciplinary outcome to be determined in accordance with established rules governing player conduct.
