Eze strike sends Arsenal back ontop of the premier league with hard-fought win over Newcastle
Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League standings after a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium, with Eberechi Eze’s early goal proving decisive in a tightly contested encounter, Sport360NG reports.
Mikel Arteta’s side had briefly slipped to second place following Manchester City’s midweek win over Burnley, which lifted the reigning champions above them on goal difference. However, the Gunners responded positively, starting brightly and taking the lead inside nine minutes.
A cleverly executed short corner routine caught Newcastle off guard, as Kai Havertz laid the ball into Eze’s path on the edge of the area. The England international produced a superb curling effort that flew into the top corner, handing Arsenal an early advantage.
Newcastle threatened sporadically in the first half, with William Osula, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali all testing Arsenal’s resolve, but they were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval.
In search of a response, head coach Eddie Howe introduced attacking reinforcements after the break, including Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes. The visitors increased their attacking intent, but a lack of composure in front of goal proved costly. Wissa squandered a late opportunity to equalise, summing up Newcastle’s frustrations as they slumped to a fourth consecutive league defeat.
The result lifts Arsenal three points clear at the top of the table, albeit having played one game more than title rivals Manchester City. However, the victory came at a cost, with both Havertz and goalscorer Eze forced off due to injuries.
Arsenal Maintain Title Pressure
Following consecutive league defeats and a setback against Manchester City, Arsenal faced a stern test but showed resilience to secure a crucial win in the title race.
Their decisive goal, originating from a short corner, an increasingly effective weapon this season, initially drew mixed reactions from supporters, with captain Martin Odegaard urging calm during celebrations.
The early injury to Havertz disrupted Arsenal’s attacking fluidity, with his replacement struggling to replicate his hold-up play. This could pose concerns for Arteta ahead of their upcoming Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
Despite also losing Eze to injury, Arsenal held firm under pressure, with the players visibly exhausted at full-time after a demanding performance. The win provides a vital boost as they look to extend their lead when they face Fulham in their next outing.
Newcastle Left to Rue Missed Chances
While Newcastle have endured heavier defeats at the Emirates in the past, this loss will be particularly frustrating given the opportunities they created.
Howe had set up his side to deal with Arsenal’s aerial threat, introducing the imposing Dan Burn at left-back and recalling goalkeeper Nick Pope. However, Arsenal’s use of short corners caught them off guard.
Warning signs had already emerged when Eze fired wide from a similar position earlier, but Newcastle failed to adjust, allowing the midfielder space to score moments later.
Despite a recent dip in confidence following defeats to Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Barcelona, Newcastle showed greater attacking intent in this match. They registered several attempts from distance, but lacked precision in the final third.
Howe turned to his bench in search of inspiration, introducing multiple attacking options, including Barnes, Wissa, Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga. Nevertheless, their efforts proved insufficient, with Wissa’s late miss encapsulating a difficult afternoon.
The defeat marks Newcastle’s ninth loss in their last 12 league matches, leaving them searching for answers as their struggles continue.
