Late fightback sends Manchester City into historic fourth straight FA Cup final
Manchester City staged a dramatic late comeback to defeat Southampton and book a place in a record fourth consecutive FA Cup final, keeping alive their ambitions of completing a domestic treble this season, Sport360NG reports.
Pep Guardiola’s men, already winners of the Carabao Cup, will return to Wembley on May 16, where they are set to face either Chelsea or Leeds United as strong favourites.
Despite making eight changes from the side that edged Burnley in midweek, City struggled to assert control early on. Their reshuffled lineup lacked fluency in a scrappy first half, creating few clear opportunities. Omar Marmoush came closest, but his near-post effort was denied by Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz. At the other end, Southampton thought they had taken the lead, only for Leo Scienza’s composed finish to be ruled out for offside.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both sides finding it difficult to break through. Ross Stewart registered Southampton’s first effort on target in the 55th minute, but it posed little threat to James Trafford. Substitute Savinho tested Peretz with a curling effort, but the goalkeeper remained alert.
The contest burst into life in the closing stages. With 11 minutes remaining, Finn Azaz stunned City with a superb strike from 20 yards, curling the ball into the top corner to give Southampton a shock lead.
However, City responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Jeremy Doku’s effort took a deflection and found its way into the far corner, restoring parity and shifting momentum.
With extra time looming, City completed the turnaround through Nico Gonzalez, who unleashed a powerful strike beyond Peretz to seal a dramatic victory and send Guardiola’s side through.
City Dig Deep to Preserve Treble Dream
Although far from their fluent best, City once again demonstrated their resilience. Guardiola’s side dominated possession with 70 percent and registered 26 attempts on goal, but were forced to wait until the final stages to make their pressure count.
The win extends City’s remarkable record in the competition, marking their eighth consecutive FA Cup semi-final triumph. Guardiola now has the opportunity to add to his previous FA Cup successes in 2019 and 2023.
Notably, Erling Haaland’s drought in major knockout matches continued, with the striker yet to register a goal or assist in 15 semi-final or final appearances for the club.
City’s persistence ultimately paid off, as late goals from Doku and Gonzalez ensured they avoided a major upset and kept their silverware hopes firmly on track.
Southampton Fall Short After Brave Display
Championship side Southampton delivered a spirited performance and came close to producing a famous upset. Entering the match on a 20-game unbeaten run, they showed discipline and resilience against elite opposition.
Azaz’s stunning opener looked set to write a new chapter in the club’s FA Cup history, but their advantage proved short-lived. The quick response from City and Gonzalez’s decisive strike ultimately ended their dream run.
Southampton had chances to extend their lead before the turnaround, with substitute Kuryu Matsuki forcing a fine save from Trafford. However, they were unable to find the crucial second goal or force extra time.
Despite the disappointment, Southampton remain well-placed in the Championship, sitting fifth and guaranteed at least a play-off spot as they push for an immediate return to the Premier League.
