Stones bids emotional farewell to Manchester City after trophy-laden decade

England international John Stones has confirmed he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on a glittering 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium, Sport360NG reports.

The 31-year-old defender, whose contract expires this summer, departs after making 293 appearances since his £47.5 million move from Everton in 2016. During that time, he established himself as a key figure in one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

Stones played a central role in City’s dominance, helping the club secure six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

In an emotional farewell message, Stones reflected on his journey, describing the club as a lifelong home.

“It has been my home for the past 10 years and it will be my home for the rest of my life,” he said.

“I came here as a young player and I’m leaving as a man, a father, a husband, and a fulfilled footballer. I’ve achieved everything I dreamed of.”

Key Figure Under Guardiola

Stones was one of Pep Guardiola’s earliest signings at City and, at the time, became the second most expensive defender in world football. He credited the Spaniard for playing a defining role in his development and success.

“I don’t think my journey would have been anywhere near as successful without him,” Stones added. “I’m incredibly grateful for everything he has done for me.”

His departure marks the continuation of a transitional phase at the club, following the exits of senior players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Ederson, with captain Bernardo Silva also expected to leave this summer.

Memorable Moments and Tactical Evolution

Despite battling injuries throughout his career, Stones remains a fan favourite. His contributions include 19 goals, notably a crucial equaliser against Arsenal in 2024, and a decisive goal-line clearance against Liverpool during the dramatic 2018–19 title race.

One of his standout tactical roles came in the 2023 Champions League final, where he excelled in a hybrid midfield position as City defeated Inter Milan to complete a historic Treble.

Nicknamed the “Barnsley Beckenbauer” for his composure and ball-playing ability, Stones overcame early inconsistencies to become a cornerstone of Guardiola’s system.

Injury Challenges Limit Final Years

Injuries, however, have significantly impacted his availability in recent seasons. After featuring in 73% of matches during his debut campaign, his involvement has dropped to just 30% this term due to recurring muscular problems.

He has made only 16 appearances across all competitions this season, with limited minutes in the Premier League. Over his decade at City, Stones has missed 737 days and nearly 300 matches due to injuries and selection issues.

Guardiola recently acknowledged the defender’s struggles but reaffirmed his quality:

“When he is fit and at his level, he is one of the best central defenders. Unfortunately, fitness has been the issue.”

Uncertain Future and World Cup Hopes

As he prepares for a new chapter, reports have linked Stones with a potential move to Barcelona, while a return to Everton and interest from newly promoted Coventry City have also been suggested.

On the international stage, Stones has earned 87 caps for England national football team. However, his chances of featuring at the upcoming World Cup remain dependent on his fitness.

England boss Thomas Tuchel is said to be monitoring his condition closely, with the defender considered a key figure in the squad when fully fit.

With the season nearing its conclusion, Stones will be aiming to regain full fitness and end his Manchester City career on a high before embarking on the next phase of his journey.
