Sessegnon strikes as Fulham beat Aston Villa to boost European hopes
Fulham returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Craven Cottage, ending a three-match drought without a goal and climbing level on points with the final European qualification spot in the early weekend standings, Sport360NG reports.
The decisive moment came through academy graduate Ryan Sessegnon, who reacted quickest to convert from close range after Raúl Jiménez’s diving header had been parried into his path by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. In a contest short on clear opportunities, Sessegnon’s composed finish proved enough to separate the sides.
Aston Villa entered the encounter aiming to strengthen their push for a UEFA Champions League place and potentially move above Manchester United into third position. However, despite enjoying more possession, particularly after the interval, they struggled to translate control into meaningful chances and now risk being overtaken by Liverpool later in the day.
Villa’s best moments in the first half came through Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, both of whom fired narrowly wide. Yet clear-cut opportunities remained scarce, with their most glaring miss arriving late in the game. Substitute Tammy Abraham, fresh from a decisive performance the previous week, squandered a golden chance in the 84th minute, sending his effort over the bar after breaking free inside the box.
Fulham, meanwhile, were initially content to concede possession and play on the counter, frustrating Villa’s rhythm. The breakthrough arrived when Sander Berge surged forward from midfield and delivered a cross from the right. Jiménez met it with a powerful header that Martínez could only push away, allowing Sessegnon to pounce on the rebound.
Villa showed greater urgency in the second half, pushing higher up the pitch but still lacking precision in the final third. Fulham thought they had doubled their lead when Timothy Castagne headed home from a Sasa Lukić corner, but the goal was ruled out after Berge was adjudged to have fouled Martínez in the build-up.
That decision kept Villa within reach, but Abraham’s late miss ensured Fulham held on for a valuable three points. The result strengthens their European ambitions and raises hopes of a return to continental competition, echoing their memorable run to the Europa League final 16 years ago.
