Gyökeres Opens Arsenal Account in Five-Star Win Over Leeds as Eze Unveiled
Arsenal produced a dominant display at the Emirates, sweeping aside Leeds United 5-0 on a day that saw Viktor Gyökeres open his account and new £60m signing Eberechi Eze presented to supporters, Sport360NG reports.
The atmosphere was electric before kick-off as Eze, wearing the No.10 shirt, was welcomed onto the pitch to a roar almost as loud as the celebrations that followed each goal. That energy quickly transferred onto the pitch, with Jurrien Timber heading in the opener from a set piece before teeing up Bukayo Saka for the second.
Saka’s emphatic strike past Lucas Perri gave Arsenal a two-goal cushion before the break, but the winger’s afternoon ended prematurely when he limped off in the second half.
Gyökeres, a £64m summer arrival, added the third with a composed finish after weaving his way into the box, while Timber headed in his second of the game from another corner. The Gunners’ fifth came via 15-year-old Max Dowman, who won a late penalty after being fouled by Anton Stach. Gyökeres converted confidently to round off the scoring.
Dowman, aged just 15 years and 234 days, became the second-youngest player to feature for Arsenal, behind only Ethan Nwaneri. His bright cameo underlined the promise that has already made him one of the standout talents of pre-season.
Mikel Arteta, however, will have concerns despite the emphatic scoreline. Captain Martin Ødegaard was forced off on his 200th appearance, joining Saka and the already sidelined Kai Havertz on the injury list, a reminder of the fitness issues that hampered last season’s title push.
Arsenal: Strength in Depth Tested Early
The afternoon felt close to perfect for Arsenal, with Gyökeres off the mark, Eze introduced, and Dowman making history. Yet, the injury setbacks will be troubling for Arteta, who must rely on the depth added by over £250m worth of summer investment to sustain a title challenge.
Eze’s arrival is expected to add a new creative dimension to the attack, while Gyökeres’ goalscoring threat was evident. Dowman’s fearlessness only adds to the excitement around the club’s future.
Leeds: Reality Check After Positive Start
Leeds, buoyed by an opening-day win over Everton, were quickly reminded of the gulf in quality at this level. Apart from Pascal Struijk’s header, comfortably saved by David Raya, Daniel Farke’s side rarely troubled Arsenal.
Debutant Noah Okafor, signed for £18m, showed glimpses of promise, and alongside Lukas Nmecha will carry much of the club’s attacking hopes this season. Leeds’ next challenge comes against Newcastle, where they will need a far more resilient display to avoid slipping into a difficult run.
