Manchester United Weigh Move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez Ahead of Deadline
Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before the transfer window closes on Monday, Sport360NG reports.
The club has been in talks with Royal Antwerp over 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens, who is eager to join and has been omitted from Antwerp’s last two fixtures. The Belgian side are also under financial pressure, with reports suggesting they must sanction a significant sale to cover an external loan.
While Lammens is seen as a promising prospect, his lack of top-level experience has raised concerns. In contrast, Martinez boasts a decorated career, including a World Cup triumph with Argentina, two FIFA Best Goalkeeper awards, and nearly 200 Premier League appearances.
Speaking after United’s 3-2 win over Burnley on Saturday, head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledged the pressure facing his goalkeepers, saying: “I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.”
Both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana have endured shaky starts to the campaign, with Bayindir’s latest error nearly costing United against Burnley before Bruno Fernandes salvaged victory with a stoppage-time penalty.
Galatasaray are also monitoring Lammens but may shift their attention to either Bayindir or Onana if United opt to prioritise the young Belgian.
United sources insist the club will bring in no more than one goalkeeper before Monday’s 19:00 BST deadline. They previously sounded out Villa over a loan move for Martinez earlier in the summer, but the Midlands side rejected the approach.
Martinez, who appeared to wave goodbye to Villa fans at the end of last season, featured in last week’s defeat to Brentford, leaving questions over his future unresolved.
