Guehi Stays at Palace After Last-Minute Liverpool Deal Breaks Down

Liverpool’s attempt to bring Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi to Anfield on transfer deadline day has collapsed despite an agreement initially being reached between the clubs, Sport360NG reports.

The Premier League champions had settled on a deal worth at least £35m, with Guehi granted permission to undergo a medical and finalise terms in London on Monday. However, Palace pulled the plug on the transfer as they struggled to secure adequate cover.

Palace were keen to recruit two centre-backs before releasing Guehi, but with Fiorentina’s Igor Julio opting for West Ham and only 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot arriving from Toulouse, the Eagles decided against sanctioning the move. Canvot has signed a four-year contract at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool, meanwhile, capped a frantic day in the market by striking a British-record £125m agreement with Newcastle for striker Alexander Isak.

Guehi had played a starring role just 24 hours earlier, captaining Palace to a 3-0 victory at Aston Villa and scoring a stunning second goal. The England international avoided talk of his future afterwards, insisting the performance was a collective effort.

The 25-year-old has been one of Liverpool’s main targets this summer, particularly after Jarell Quansah’s switch to Bayer Leverkusen left Jurgen Klopp’s squad short of defensive options. Their vulnerability at the back has already been exposed this season, conceding six goals in their first three games and losing the Community Shield on penalties to Palace.

For now, Guehi remains at Selhurst Park, where he has featured in every minute of their six matches across domestic and European competition. He captained the side to their historic FA Cup triumph over Manchester City last season, securing Palace’s first major trophy and qualification for the Europa Conference League.

Guehi’s long-term future, however, remains unresolved. He has entered the final year of his contract and has informed Palace he does not intend to extend his stay. Since arriving from Chelsea in 2021, he has become a key figure for both club and country, playing a central role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.
