Gundogan seals Galatasaray switch after Manchester City exit

Galatasaray have confirmed the signing of veteran midfielder Ilkay Gundogan following his departure from Manchester City, Sport360NG reports.

The 34-year-old, who joins on a free transfer, has signed a contract with the Turkish champions that runs until the summer of 2027.

Although Gundogan had one year remaining on his City deal, he was granted permission to move, with the Turkish transfer window remaining open until 12 September.

Reflecting on his exit, Gundogan said: “Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart. We shared so much success, and I will never forget captaining the team to a historic Treble. Winning the Champions League trophy in Istanbul was the highlight of my career.”

The German international, born in Gelsenkirchen to Turkish parents, was Pep Guardiola’s first signing at City in 2016. During seven years in Manchester, he made 358 appearances, scored 65 goals and lifted five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League in 2023. He briefly joined Barcelona in 2023 before returning to City the following season, making 33 league appearances as Guardiola’s side finished third.

City’s director of football Hugo Viana paid tribute, describing him as “a name synonymous with success at Manchester City”.

Gundogan, who previously played for Bochum, Nuremberg and Borussia Dortmund, grew up supporting Galatasaray and is now set for a homecoming. His memorable brace against Aston Villa on the final day of the 2021-22 season, which sealed the league title, remains one of the defining moments of his City career.

He is expected to receive a warm reception when Galatasaray face Manchester City in the Champions League group stage in January.
