Siasia: Lookman, Arokodare Key to Nigeria’s World Cup Qualifier in South Africa

Former Super Eagles head coach Samson Siasia has advised current manager Eric Chelle to make the most of Ademola Lookman’s dead-ball expertise and Tolu Arokodare’s aerial strength in today’s pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, Sport360NG reports.

Nigeria head into the clash in Bloemfontein buoyed by a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, where Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Arokodare came off the bench to net the decisive goal just minutes after his introduction. That result kept the Eagles within striking distance of Group C leaders South Africa, with a win at the Free State Stadium set to close the gap to just three points.

Speaking on SuperSport, Siasia said the win against Rwanda should lift the team’s morale, but cautioned that Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana, who are enjoying their best qualifying run since 2002 with four straight victories, will pose a stern challenge.
“We have to keep possession, earn free-kicks, and give players like Lookman the platform to change the game. Arokodare’s hold-up play can also be a big asset in creating opportunities,” he explained.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner urged Chelle’s side to cut out defensive lapses, avoid giving away cheap fouls, and make the most of chances away from home. He added that securing at least a point would be valuable, though victory would significantly boost Nigeria’s hopes of booking a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Siasia also emphasised the importance of building on the Rwanda performance, particularly by creating more scoring opportunities. While acknowledging South Africa’s strong form, he reminded Bafana Bafana that Nigeria have historically been a difficult opponent.
“Facing Nigeria has never been straightforward for South Africa,” Siasia said. “What we need is a clear plan and the discipline to execute it.”

He further highlighted the need for the backline to stay disciplined, especially on away soil, while insisting that set-pieces could prove decisive if Lookman is given the chance to deliver. Arokodare’s impact off the bench against Rwanda, where he reacted quickest to score the winner, reinforced Siasia’s belief that the young striker can play a key role in holding up the ball and bringing teammates into play.
