Liverpool’s £125m signing Isak out indefinitely after leg surgery
Liverpool striker Alexander Isak will be sidelined for several months following surgery on a fractured left leg, the club has confirmed, Sport360NG reports.
The Sweden international “successfully underwent surgery” on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture, Liverpool said, but no timeline has yet been provided for his full recovery.
Isak, 26, was forced off the field after scoring against Tottenham on Saturday, following a challenge from Micky van de Ven. He appeared in visible pain and was assisted off the pitch by the club’s medical staff.
Signed from Newcastle in September for a Premier League-record £125 million, Isak has scored three goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool this season. He made his debut in a Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on 17 September and netted his first goal for the club in a 2-1 victory against Southampton. His first league goal came in a 1-1 draw at West Ham on 30 November.
The injury represents another setback in what has been a challenging start to life at Anfield for Isak. Earlier this summer, he was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia with a “minor thigh injury” and spent time training alone at former club Real Sociedad before completing his move to Liverpool on deadline day.
The setback comes as Liverpool face a shortage of attacking options. Mohamed Salah is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations, and while he is expected to remain at the club beyond January, the squad lacks depth in the forward positions. Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, and Rio Ngumoha have been inconsistent or used sparingly, while Hugo Ekitike has impressed with 11 goals since joining in the summer and will likely shoulder more responsibility in Isak’s absence.
Liverpool have also expressed interest in January reinforcements, including Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, whose £65 million release clause has attracted attention from other Premier League clubs.
Manager Arne Slot is set to address the injury and the club’s plans in a press conference on Tuesday at 09:00 GMT.
