CAF Appoints Issa Sy to Officiate Nigeria–Algeria AFCON Quarter-Final

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Senegalese referee Issa Sy to take charge of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between Nigeria and Algeria in Marrakech, Sport360NG reports.

Sy replaces Omar Artan, who was originally listed for the fixture before CAF opted to make a late change following concerns over refereeing decisions at the ongoing tournament.

The Senegalese official is already familiar with the 2025 AFCON, having served as Video Assistant Referee during the group-stage clash between hosts Morocco and Tanzania.

CAF’s decision is expected to ease tension ahead of a high-profile contest that will determine one of the semi-finalists.

Nigeria secured their place in the last eight with a commanding 4–0 win over Mozambique, while Algeria edged past the Democratic Republic of Congo 1–0 after extra time to progress.

Saturday’s meeting also rekindles memories of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, where Algeria eliminated the Super Eagles with a dramatic 2–1 victory, sealed by a late Riyad Mahrez free-kick.

The quarter-final is scheduled to kick off at 5pm Nigerian time.
