BREAKING: Xabi Alonso departs Real Madrid after eight months as Arbeloa steps in

Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso, ending his brief spell at the Santiago Bernabéu after just eight months in charge, Sport360NG reports.

The Spanish giants announced that the 44-year-old had left the club by mutual agreement, before swiftly naming former defender Alvaro Arbeloa as his successor. Arbeloa has been promoted from his role with Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s B team.

Alonso’s exit follows a disappointing run of results, capped by defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday. Real currently sit four points behind Barça in La Liga.

A former Real Madrid midfielder, Alonso returned to the club last summer after leading Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title in 2024. He succeeded Carlo Ancelotti but struggled to fully impose his philosophy during his short tenure.

In a statement, the club paid tribute to Alonso’s legacy, describing him as “a Real Madrid legend” and thanking him and his coaching staff for their commitment. The statement added that the Bernabéu “will always be his home”.

Despite winning 24 of his 34 matches in charge, pressure mounted after Real were booed off following a loss to Celta Vigo last month. That result reportedly triggered an emergency meeting among senior club officials. Earlier in the season, heavy defeats to Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester City further intensified scrutiny.

Arbeloa, a former Spain international, has worked within Real Madrid’s academy structure since 2020 but will be taking charge of a senior side for the first time.

Commenting on the situation, BBC Sport columnist Guillem Balague suggested Alonso’s downfall stemmed from “a clash between a coach with a clear methodology and players who prefer to rely on instinct,” highlighting underlying tensions during his spell in charge.
