Mike Tomlin has stepped down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, bringing an end to a 19-year spell in charge of the franchise, Sport360NG reports.

Steelers president Art Rooney confirmed that Tomlin requested to leave the role following the team’s play-off exit against the Houston Texans on Wildcard Weekend.

Rooney paid tribute to Tomlin’s impact, praising his longevity and success during one of the most stable periods in the club’s history.

“I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years,” Rooney said. “My family and I, and everyone connected to Steelers management, are forever grateful for the passion and commitment he brought to Steelers football.”

Tomlin also issued a statement, expressing his enduring affection for the organisation and the city of Pittsburgh.

“My respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change,” he said. “This organisation has been a huge part of my life, and it has been an absolute honour to lead this team. Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having served as a steward of this franchise.”

Tomlin, 53, led the Steelers to their sixth Super Bowl triumph in 2008 and guided the team to the play-offs on 13 occasions. However, the latest loss to Houston marked a seventh consecutive post-season defeat, with sections of the fanbase voicing frustration during the campaign.

His departure leaves Pittsburgh preparing to appoint only its fourth head coach since 1969, underlining the club’s long-standing preference for continuity.

Across the league, Tomlin’s exit represents the ninth head-coaching change since the end of the regular season in the National Football League.
