The winners of the CAF Confederation Cup will earn a place at the FIFA Club World Cup following FIFA’s decision to expand the competition to 48 teams from 2029, Sport360NG reports.

World football’s governing body confirmed on Thursday that the global showpiece will grow from 36 to 48 participating clubs, significantly increasing representation across all confederations. As part of the revised allocation, Africa’s quota has been raised to seven slots.

In a major boost for continental club football, the new format grants the CAF Confederation Cup champion direct qualification to the FIFA Club World Cup. The move effectively elevates Africa’s second-tier club competition by providing a clear pathway to the global stage.

The inclusion is expected to enhance the prestige and competitiveness of the Confederation Cup, with participating teams now incentivised by the prospect of facing some of the world’s leading clubs.

Africa’s seven representatives are projected to include winners of its premier club tournaments, alongside other high-performing sides selected based on established FIFA and CAF criteria.

FIFA said the expansion is designed to broaden global participation while strengthening the commercial appeal and overall competitiveness of the tournament, ensuring increased opportunities for clubs across different regions to compete at the highest level.
