WAFCON 2026 faces fresh uncertainty over commonwealth games schedule clash
The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) could face another delay following a scheduling conflict in the international sporting calendar, Sport360NG reports.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had originally planned the tournament to run from March 17 to April 4, 2026, before announcing a new window of July 25 to August 16.
However, the revised schedule has created a potential clash with the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which are set to take place from July 23 to August 2.
The overlap raises concerns over several issues, including player availability, travel arrangements, and broadcast logistics. The situation has triggered fresh discussions about the possibility of adjusting the dates of the continental women’s football showpiece.
Adding to the scheduling pressure is the tournament’s closeness to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the women’s championship currently slated to begin just a week after the conclusion of the global event.
CAF has not yet issued an official statement regarding a possible change of dates, but discussions are ongoing as stakeholders assess options to ensure the smooth staging of the competition.
