BREAKING: Salah to leave Liverpool at season’s end after nine-year Anfield era

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will depart the club at the end of the season, bringing an end to a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield, Sport360NG reports. 

The 33-year-old Egypt international announced his decision in a video shared on social media, revealing that he will move on once the current campaign concludes.

“Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell,” Salah said. “I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.”

Despite signing a two-year contract extension in April 2025, Salah will exit on a free transfer after reaching an agreement with the club regarding his future.

The forward’s impending departure follows a challenging season by his own high standards. He has registered 10 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions, putting him on track for his lowest scoring return since joining the club in 2017.

Tensions also surfaced earlier in the campaign, with Salah stating after a 3-3 draw against Leeds in December that he felt “thrown under the bus” and suggesting his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had deteriorated. Although speculation about a January exit intensified, the Egyptian returned to the squad following his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Liverpool indicated that Salah chose to make his decision public early out of respect for supporters and a desire to provide clarity regarding his future.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Salah spoke emotionally about his connection to Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.

“I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life,” he said. “Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, a history, a spirit.

“We celebrated victories, won major trophies and stood together through difficult moments.”

Salah also referenced significant periods during his stay, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent loss of teammate Diogo Jota, highlighting the personal impact of his time on Merseyside.

Since arriving from Roma in 2017, Salah has been instrumental in Liverpool’s resurgence, helping the club secure two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League crown, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and the Community Shield.

He leaves as one of the club’s all-time greats, with 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring chart. Individually, he has claimed four Premier League Golden Boots and three PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards.

Paying tribute to the fans, Salah added: “You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. Leaving is never easy, but this club will always be my home.”

Liverpool described Salah’s spell at Anfield as a “remarkable nine-year chapter” and confirmed that tributes to celebrate his legacy will be arranged later in the year.

For now, the club emphasised that the forward remains focused on finishing the season strongly before bidding an emotional farewell to supporters.
