Modric announce Real Madrid departure After Club World Cup Defeat
Luka Modric’s storied tenure at Real Madrid came to a disappointing close on Wednesday as the Spanish giants suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Despite the heavy loss at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Modric’s legacy remains untarnished, according to manager Xabi Alonso.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner and Real Madrid’s most decorated player is now set for a move to Italian side AC Milan after 12 unforgettable years in Madrid.
Since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, the Croatian midfielder has made 597 appearances and captured 28 major honours, including six Champions League titles.
Reflecting on Modric’s final appearance, Alonso—who once played alongside him in midfield—paid tribute to the 39-year-old’s impact.
“This isn’t the farewell we hoped for—it’s a painful one,” Alonso admitted. “But Luka won’t be remembered for this match. He’s a true legend, not just for Real Madrid, but for world football. His legacy goes far beyond the 25 minutes he played tonight.”
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also praised Modric’s influence both on and off the pitch.
“He always gets standing ovations, and not just from Madrid fans,” Courtois said. “He’s a fantastic player and a wonderful teammate. His presence will be deeply missed.”
