Meribel Threatens to Pull Out as 2030 Winter Olympics Venue Over Proposed Changes
Meribel, a French Alpine resort, has raised the possibility of withdrawing as a host venue for the 2030 Winter Olympics following proposed changes to the event schedule.
Originally selected to stage both women’s alpine skiing and Paralympic skiing, Meribel is now facing uncertainty after the Games’ organising committee introduced alternative plans. According to Thierry Monin, mayor of Les Allues the administrative region that includes Meribel committee president Edgar Grospiron presented three potential hosting options during a visit on Thursday. One of those proposals involved relocating the women’s alpine skiing events to Val d’Isère, approximately 75 kilometres away.
“If Meribel is not hosting both events, which goes against Olympic tradition, we will withdraw our bid,” Monin told AFP. He emphasized that since the 1992 Winter Games, men’s and women’s alpine skiing events have consistently taken place at the same venue.
France’s original bid to the International Olympic Committee included plans to hold women’s alpine skiing in Meribel, with the men’s events in nearby Courchevel.
