Leeds United have strengthened their midfield ahead of the new Premier League season by signing Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United on a four-year contract.

While financial details remain undisclosed, British media report the deal is valued at an initial £10 million, potentially rising to £12 million through add-ons.

The 27-year-old joins newly-promoted Leeds after finding opportunities limited at St James’ Park last season, where he made just eight starts in the Premier League. With one year remaining on his Newcastle contract, Longstaff opted for a fresh start at Elland Road following a campaign spent behind the likes of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in the pecking order.

A product of Newcastle’s academy, Longstaff departs his boyhood club having made 171 top-flight appearances.

He becomes Leeds’ fifth summer signing as the Yorkshire side prepare for their Premier League return, following the acquisitions of Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Leeds, who topped the Championship last season to secure promotion, are aiming to reassert themselves in the top flight after a storied history that includes being English champions in 1992, just before the Premier League era began.
