Okoye Hit with Two-Month Ban Over Betting Scandal
Udinese and Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) following a betting controversy linked to a Serie A fixture against Lazio during the 2023/24 season.
The 24-year-old was found guilty of sporting misconduct after it was determined that he intentionally sought a yellow card during the match in question, raising suspicions of match manipulation. Irregular betting activity surrounding the incident prompted a formal investigation.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the FIGC’s National Federal Tribunal confirmed Okoye’s suspension, stating that the goalkeeper had deliberately committed an act to ensure he was booked, allegedly with the aim of influencing betting outcomes.
“The National Federal Tribunal, Disciplinary Section, definitively ruling, imposes on Mr Emil Maduka Okoye the sanction of two (2) months of disqualification in official matches, starting from the beginning of the first official competition of the 2025/2026 sporting season,” the Tribunal declared.
The ban is set to take effect from the first competitive match of the upcoming season, meaning Okoye will miss six official fixtures. These include Udinese’s Coppa Italia opener against Carrarese on August 18, followed by the club’s first five Serie A matches. He will be eligible to return to action on October 19 when Udinese travel to face newly promoted Cremonese.
The case has reignited concerns about the influence of betting syndicates in professional football and the integrity of player behaviour on the pitch. It has also sparked widespread reaction in both Italy and Nigeria, especially considering Okoye’s international profile.
Once Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Okoye featured at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations but has since struggled to maintain consistency at both club and national level. He has yet to issue a public response to the FIGC’s ruling, which could further complicate his chances of regaining a regular spot in the Super Eagles setup.
