Newcastle Launch Ekitike Bid as Liverpool Target Isak
Newcastle’s Record-Breaking Pursuit of Hugo Ekitike Sparks Speculation
Newcastle United are pushing to secure the signature of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, but the club’s pursuit of the French forward has stirred unease among some supporters.
The Magpies’ initial £70 million offer was rejected by the Bundesliga side, but Newcastle remain determined to negotiate a deal that would eclipse their current transfer record. The club insists their top players are not for sale, especially star striker Alexander Isak, but the timing of the Ekitike move has led to inevitable speculation.
With Liverpool also searching for a new frontman and known admirers of Isak, reports suggest the Premier League champions have explored a potential move for the Swedish international, who could command a fee in the region of £130 million. Despite the interest, Newcastle maintain Isak is not on the market.
Insiders believe the North East club is working to develop a more adaptable frontline capable of switching formations mid-match. Ekitike, who has also attracted Liverpool’s attention, is seen as a player who fits that vision due to his fluid style and ability to score from multiple areas on the pitch.
Can Ekitike and Isak Coexist in Eddie Howe’s Attack?
Isak, 25, has impressed since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for a then-record £63 million. With 54 Premier League goals in three seasons, his value to the team is clear. Ekitike, by comparison, netted 15 times and registered eight assists for Frankfurt last season, also operating as a lone striker for much of the campaign.
The tactical dilemma is evident: both players thrive in central roles, and Newcastle under Eddie Howe typically line up with a single centre-forward. However, BBC Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck believes there’s optimism about deploying the duo together.
“Newcastle like versatile attackers,” he said. “They pursued Chelsea’s Joao Pedro earlier in the summer for that reason. Ekitike allows them to shift tactics in-game without needing wholesale changes. Even before Callum Wilson’s departure, Newcastle wanted another striker.”
Statistically, Ekitike and Isak show significant overlap in how they play and where they operate on the pitch, particularly the inside-left channel. Yet Ekitike’s tendency to drop deeper to link with midfielders could make him a complementary partner rather than a direct rival to Isak.
Why Ekitike Fits Newcastle’s Long-Term Vision
Newcastle’s interest in Ekitike dates back to their first transfer window under Saudi ownership in January 2022. While a move didn’t materialize at the time, and they later turned to Isak instead, their admiration for the Frenchman never faded.
Ekitike’s career has included spells at Reims, PSG, and Frankfurt, where he initially arrived on loan before signing permanently in 2023. Though his time in Paris was underwhelming, he flourished in Germany, particularly during a fruitful partnership with Omar Marmoush prior to the latter’s transfer to Manchester City.
“His intelligence on the pitch is a real asset,” said German football analyst Constantin Eckner. “Ekitike worked well both alone and in a two-striker setup. While not the most explosive forward, he creates space with clever movement and can beat defenders with guile.”
Frankfurt are reportedly demanding at least £86 million for their striker, and while they’re open to selling, they won’t accept a cut-price deal. The Bundesliga club’s model hinges on developing young talent and cashing in to reinvest.
As Newcastle gear up for another season of European football and domestic ambitions, bringing in Ekitike could provide the tactical flexibility and depth they lacked at times last season, while keeping Isak firmly at the heart of their attack.
