Mbeumo Seals Dream Move to Manchester United in £65m Transfer from Brentford

Bryan Mbeumo has officially completed a big-money move to Manchester United, describing the switch as a childhood dream come true. The 25-year-old winger joins the Premier League giants from Brentford in a deal worth an initial £65 million, with a further £6 million in potential add-ons.

The Cameroon international has penned a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option to extend by another year, becoming United’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.

United’s pursuit of Mbeumo has been one of the most protracted sagas of the current transfer window. Their opening £55 million bid in early June was turned down, followed by a second attempt worth £62.5 million. It wasn’t until their third offer last week that an agreement was finally struck.

Speaking after the move, Mbeumo expressed his excitement at joining the club he has long admired.

“When I found out there was an opportunity to sign for Manchester United, I couldn’t turn it down. This is the club I dreamed of playing for as a boy,” he said. “I’m driven to keep improving and know that under Ruben Amorim and alongside top players, I can reach another level.”

The winger, who will wear the number 19 shirt, is set to join United’s pre-season tour of the United States this week.

Mbeumo’s Rise at Brentford

Mbeumo’s time at Brentford was marked by steady development and impressive output. Since arriving from French side Troyes in 2019, he has scored 70 goals and contributed 51 assists across 242 appearances in all competitions.

Last season, he hit career-best numbers in the Premier League with 20 goals and seven assists, making him one of the most effective forwards in the division.

“Bryan has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent attacking threats in recent years,” said United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox. “His commitment to our vision and his eagerness to be part of what we’re building made him an ideal fit.”

From Brentford’s side, the deal represents a club-record sale, surpassing the £40 million received for Ivan Toney last summer.

“Bryan arrived as a teenager and grew into one of our most important players,” said Phil Giles, Brentford’s director of football. “He leaves with our gratitude and best wishes for the future.”

A Forward in His Prime

Mbeumo’s statistics from last season underline his evolution into a top-tier attacking player. He ranked among the best in the league for shot conversion rate (23.53%), trailing only Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak. He also stood out for his work rate, winning the ball 32 times in the opposition third—third-most in the league.

Perhaps most telling is his ability to drive with the ball: no player in the 2024–25 campaign registered more goal-ending carries over five metres than Mbeumo, with nine such efforts.

Inside the Negotiations

United’s acquisition of Mbeumo wasn’t without its complications. Negotiations with Brentford stretched over weeks, partly due to the west London club adjusting their valuation during talks. It’s understood Brentford were open to selling to rivals Tottenham or Newcastle, who were prepared to offer higher fees, with Spurs’ new manager Thomas Frank—formerly of Brentford—keen on a reunion.

At one stage, with Brentford demanding £70 million up front and another £7 million in add-ons, United were reluctant to meet the valuation, especially after committing £62.5 million to sign Cunha. Despite some suggestions that Mbeumo might need to revise his personal terms to help bridge the gap, the two clubs eventually reached a compromise.

United officials see this deal as a significant victory, especially with other clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly circling. Finishing 15th last season, United were aware they lacked the immediate lure of Champions League football, making the successful pursuit of Mbeumo a key milestone in their rebuilding process under Amorim.

More Moves Expected

While Mbeumo’s arrival ticks off one of Amorim’s top targets, United’s transfer activity is far from over. With Marcus Rashford close to sealing a move to Barcelona, and several squad members still in limbo, further changes are expected before the window closes on 1 September.

Still, Mbeumo’s signing is a major step forward, both in footballing terms and as a statement of intent.
