Gyokeres Unveiled as Arsenal Win Newcastle in Singapore Pre-season tour
New Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres made his first public appearance in Gunners colours as Mikel Arteta’s side claimed a 3-2 win over Newcastle United in a lively pre-season friendly in Singapore.
The 27-year-old Swedish striker, who joined from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £64m, was introduced to a raucous reception at the National Stadium ahead of kick-off. Though he didn’t feature in the match, his arrival stole the spotlight, with fans performing his signature celebration as he emerged from the tunnel amid flames and cheers.
Despite the buzz surrounding Gyokeres, it was Newcastle who struck early. Anthony Elanga, one of the Magpies’ new signings, opened the scoring in the sixth minute after latching onto a Sandro Tonali pass and bundling the ball into the net.
Arsenal responded well, and after Kai Havertz and Ben White both saw efforts go close, the Gunners levelled in the 33rd minute. Havertz turned provider with a deft flick that allowed Mikel Merino to slot home. Just moments later, Arsenal took the lead when Havertz whipped in a low cross that Newcastle’s Alex Murphy inadvertently diverted into his own goal.
Eddie Howe made sweeping changes at the break, introducing nine substitutes. One of them, Jacob Murphy, made an immediate impact, drifting into space before unleashing a shot that squirmed past David Raya to make it 2-2.
Arsenal, too, turned to youth in the second half, with 15-year-old Max Dowman once again catching the eye. The highly rated teenager won a penalty with a dazzling solo run, leaving captain Martin Ødegaard to convert from the spot and restore the Gunners’ advantage.
There was a slight concern for Arsenal as defender Riccardo Calafiori, another recent signing, hobbled off just minutes after the restart, with Jakub Kiwior taking his place.
Off-Pitch Focus and Transfer Talk
Though the action on the pitch thrilled the crowd, much of the attention remained on Gyokeres, who had flown in directly to greet supporters but is yet to train with his new teammates. His arrival adds firepower to an Arsenal squad that has often lacked a traditional centre-forward presence in recent seasons.
For Newcastle, talk surrounding Alexander Isak’s future loomed large during their stay in Singapore. The Swedish forward is reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool, and while Eddie Howe remains focused on pre-season preparations, he acknowledged that any potential move would need to “make sense for the club.”
Elanga’s performance offered a bright spot for the Magpies, as he linked well with fellow forward William Osula in a new-look attacking setup.
Arsenal now turn their attention to a high-profile friendly against Tottenham in Hong Kong, while Newcastle head to South Korea for a clash with Team K League.
