Son Heung-min Confirms Tottenham Exit After 10 Years at Club
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has announced he will be leaving the club this summer, ending a decade-long spell in north London, Sport360NG reports.
The 33-year-old forward made the revelation during a press conference in Seoul on Saturday, where Spurs are currently on their pre-season tour. Son, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has since made over 450 appearances and scored 173 goals for the Premier League side.
“Before we begin, I want to share that I’ve decided to leave Tottenham this summer,” he told reporters. “The club has been very supportive throughout this process.”
Although Son didn’t disclose his next destination, he has been strongly linked with a move to Major League Soccer in the United States. His decision comes just months after helping Tottenham lift the Europa League trophy in May, their first European title in more than four decades, a milestone he admitted played a significant role in shaping his future.
Reflecting on his journey, an emotional Son said, “This has been the toughest decision of my career. I’ve created unforgettable memories here. But I feel the need for a new challenge, a new environment. Ten years is a long time. I arrived as a 23-year-old kid and I leave as a grown, proud man.”
New Spurs manager Thomas Frank, who succeeded Ange Postecoglou in June, paid glowing tribute to the South Korean icon.
“Personally, I would have loved the chance to work with a player and person of his calibre,” Frank said. “He’s a true Spurs legend and undoubtedly one of the greatest to ever grace the Premier League.”
Son is expected to receive a hero’s welcome when Tottenham face Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul, in what could be his final appearance in front of his home crowd as a Spurs player.
Meanwhile, Tottenham’s transfer activity has been relatively quiet this summer. Their only major signing so far is West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, while a proposed £60 million deal for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White fell through.
