Chelle urges caution despite super eagles’ semifinal triumph over Gabon
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has warned that it is too early for celebrations, even after Nigeria’s commanding 4-1 win over Gabon in the CAF World Cup Playoff semifinals, Sport360NG reports.
Chelle described the victory as just one step on a long journey toward securing a spot at the FIFA World Cup. “It’s a long road. We’ve won a match, but there are still hurdles ahead. We must keep working hard to reach our goal,” he said.
The Malian coach admitted that extra time was unexpected but commended his squad for their determination and focus. “Against Gabon, we didn’t anticipate going into extra time, but that’s football. In the first 30 minutes, our performance was excellent, ball control, intensity, and precision were all there. Success isn’t just about intensity; you must also be physically prepared,” Chelle noted.
He also praised the players for their discipline in executing his tactical instructions. “I am very proud of these guys. Every time, they focus on what I ask of them and execute it on the pitch. Today, the key was passion and working together toward a common goal. They delivered,” he added.
Despite the decisive victory, Chelle insisted that celebrations will wait until after Sunday’s final, saying, “Maybe after the second game, we can smile.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Chelle stressed his aim to establish a clear identity for the Super Eagles. “I don’t dwell on the past. Since my arrival, my focus has been on creating an identity, how we play in defense and attack. Every FIFA window, even with only two or three training sessions, we strive to improve technically and ensure the players understand my approach,” he explained.
Nigeria will face DR Congo on Sunday in a winner-takes-all clash that will determine the CAF representative for the intercontinental playoffs ahead of next year’s World Cup.
