Living Up to Jude: Jobe Bellingham Addresses Pressure at Dortmund
Jobe Bellingham has acknowledged feeling anxious about stepping into the spotlight at Borussia Dortmund, where his older brother Jude made a name for himself before joining Real Madrid, Sport360NG reports.
The 19-year-old midfielder made the switch to the Bundesliga side from Sunderland in June, shortly after helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League. While the move marks a major step in his career, Jobe admitted he was well aware of the inevitable comparisons to his brother.
“It’s something that naturally crosses your mind. As a young player, those thoughts and anxieties come up,” he said during Dortmund’s pre-season training camp in Austria.
Now a key figure for both Real Madrid and the England national team, Jude Bellingham spent three successful years at Dortmund before sealing a high-profile transfer to Spain in 2023. Despite the weight of expectation, Jobe insisted the decision to join Dortmund was entirely his own.
“The club did a great job of reassuring me that I wouldn’t be judged by someone else’s achievements,” he explained. “This is a path I’ve chosen for myself. People don’t need to fully understand it, it’s my journey.”
Jobe has already made an impression in Dortmund colours, featuring in the Club World Cup in the United States where he scored and registered an assist in four appearances.
Continuing a tradition from his Sunderland days, the younger Bellingham wears “Jobe” on the back of his shirt, deliberately distancing himself from the Bellingham legacy as he looks to carve out his own identity.
He revealed that Jude was supportive of the move, though their conversation was light-hearted. “He was really proud. All he said was ‘embrace it’ we don’t usually have serious chats,” Jobe shared.
Unlike his brother, who thrives in an attacking role, Jobe typically plays deeper in midfield and is more reserved off the pitch.
“I’m not chasing stardom,” he said. “I just want to be one of the best performers on the pitch and stay focused on my game.”
Borussia Dortmund begin their season on August 18 with a German Cup first-round fixture against Rot-Weiss Essen.
