Newcastle draw 10-man Villa as Isak saga overshadows opener

Newcastle began their Premier League campaign with frustration after failing to capitalise on a numerical advantage in a goalless draw at Aston Villa, Sport360NG reports.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men with just under 25 minutes remaining when Ezri Konsa was dismissed for hauling down Anthony Gordon, but Eddie Howe’s side could not force a breakthrough in the absence of unsettled striker Alexander Isak, who is pushing for a move to Liverpool.

Anthony Elanga, making his debut following a £55m move, saw an early effort brilliantly saved by Marco Bizot before Gordon headed over from close range. The pair both passed up further opportunities as Newcastle dominated a one-sided first half, in which Villa failed to muster a single attempt, the first Premier League home team to do so since Fulham against Manchester City in May 2024.

Unai Emery’s side improved after the interval, with Boubacar Kamara and Ollie Watkins both testing Nick Pope, before Konsa’s red card forced Villa into a defensive rearguard. Despite long spells of possession, Newcastle’s lack of a focal point in attack proved costly.

Newcastle perspective: unity but blunt edge

The build-up to the season has been dominated by Isak’s transfer stance, yet Howe’s players showed togetherness, with a spirited display that included plenty of endeavour but not enough end product. Gordon, deployed centrally in Isak’s absence, looked lively but lacked composure, while Elanga spurned the best of the chances. The need for a reliable finisher remains clear if Newcastle are to sustain a challenge this season.

Villa perspective: Emery’s squad looks thin

Emery has spoken openly about Villa’s financial restrictions and the need to be “intelligent” in the market, but their lack of depth was evident. Apart from 34-year-old debutant goalkeeper Bizot, the squad looked largely unchanged from last season and short of attacking options. Watkins remains overburdened, and with Konsa now suspended, the need for reinforcements is pressing as the transfer deadline approaches.

What’s next?

Aston Villa travel to Brentford before hosting Crystal Palace later this month.

Newcastle face champions Liverpool at St James’ Park next weekend before a trip to Leeds.
