Tavernier strike gives Bournemouth first win as 10-man Wolves struggle
Bournemouth picked up their first Premier League victory of the season with a narrow win over Wolves, thanks to Marcus Tavernier’s deflected effort, Sport360NG reports.
The decisive moment came midway through the first half when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde surrendered possession cheaply near his own box. Antoine Semenyo seized on the mistake and fed Tavernier, whose strike clipped Emmanuel Agbadou and looped in off the underside of the crossbar.
The Cherries, who had already threatened through Semenyo and Marcus Tavernier, almost doubled their advantage when Semenyo crashed a shot against the bar from David Brooks’ cross. At the other end, Djordje Petrovic kept Wolves at bay with a sharp save to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Wolves’ task became even harder after the break when Toti Gomes was dismissed for bringing down striker Evanilson as the last man. Reduced to 10 players, Vitor Pereira’s side struggled to muster clear openings, though Jhon Arias went close by finding the side-netting.
Jose Sa kept the visitors in contention with a fine stop from Tyler Adams’ long-range effort, but Bournemouth remained in control and comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure the points.
Wolves: Reinforcements needed
The defeat exposed Wolves’ lack of depth, with manager Vitor Pereira again emphasising his need for “three more players” before the transfer window closes.
Jackson Tchatchoua, a recent signing from Hellas Verona, was one of the few bright spots after replacing the injured Ki-Jana Hoever early on. However, fellow wing-back David Moller Wolfe endured another disappointing outing before being substituted at half-time.
Full debutant Arias offered some threat but was substituted just after the hour, a decision that drew frustration from travelling supporters already concerned by the team’s lack of creativity.
The absence of holding midfielder Andre also raised eyebrows, though Pereira insisted the Brazilian “must increase his level” before regaining his place.
Wolves’ situation worsened when Strand Larsen limped off late with an Achilles problem, leaving Pereira short of attacking options heading into Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie with West Ham. Talks are ongoing over Girona defender Ladislav Krejci as Wolves look to bolster their defensive cover following Toti’s red card.
Bournemouth: Progress under Iraola
For Bournemouth, the performance built on their encouraging display in last week’s defeat at Liverpool. Manager Andoni Iraola stuck with the same XI, and his faith was rewarded with another energetic, front-foot display.
Semenyo’s first-half near miss underlined the Cherries’ attacking intent, while substitutes Ryan Christie, Justin Kluivert and new signing Amine Adli all gained valuable minutes after Toti’s dismissal tilted the game in their favour.
Adli, fresh from Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga-winning squad, impressed with his direct running, offering further evidence of Bournemouth’s growing depth.
With Tavernier decisive and Iraola’s side showing resilience to manage the game, Bournemouth head into the coming weeks with momentum and competition for places in good shape.
