Sweden include unsettled Isak in World Cup qualifying squad
Sweden have named Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak in their squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo, despite his ongoing standoff with his club, Sport360NG reports.
The 25-year-old, who is pushing for a move to Liverpool, has yet to feature for Newcastle this season and has been training away from Eddie Howe’s first-team group. Isak recently criticised the club for what he described as broken promises, making clear his desire to leave St. James’ Park.
Liverpool’s interest in the forward remains strong, although their opening £110m bid was turned down earlier this month. Reports suggest the Merseyside club are preparing a second offer before the transfer window closes.
Despite his lack of competitive action, Sweden head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has kept faith in Isak, describing him as a player capable of changing games.
“I’m very pleased Alexander wants to be involved. He is an important player for us,” Tomasson said. “The circumstances are not ideal since he hasn’t trained with his team, but his quality is unquestionable and the World Cup is very important for him.”
Isak could therefore make his return to competitive football in Sweden’s colours next week, even as his future in England remains unresolved.
He will be joined in the squad by Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, who opened his account for the Gunners at the weekend with a brace.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have denied any agreement allowing Isak to leave this summer and maintain he is not for sale.
