Super Eagles Honour Legendary Goalkeeper Peter Rufai who dies at age 61
The Super Eagles have paid a heartfelt tribute to former national team goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, Peter Rufai, following reports of his passing.
In a statement shared on Thursday via their official X handle, the team remembered Rufai — affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana” — as a true icon whose impact on Nigerian football remains indelible.
“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana,” the post read. “We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai — a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.”
The tribute went on to celebrate his enduring legacy, not only for his performances on the pitch but also for the inspiration he provided beyond the game.
“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” the team added.
Rufai was a key figure in Nigeria’s golden generation, helping the Super Eagles clinch the 1994 AFCON title and playing a vital role in the country’s debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup later that year.
