AFCON: Awaziem pledges positional flexibility ahead of super eagles’ AFCON 2025 campaign
Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has reaffirmed his willingness to play in any role assigned to him as Nigeria gears up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Sport360NG reports.
Naturally a centre-back, Awaziem has built a reputation for his adaptability, having featured across several defensive positions for both club and country during his career.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, the former FC Porto defender stressed that personal preference will take a back seat to the tactical demands of the coaching staff.
“I’ve played in different positions across the backline. It all depends on the coach’s structure and where he wants me to operate,” Awaziem said in an interview with Elegbete TV.
He added that his primary focus is contributing positively to the team’s objectives, regardless of where he is deployed.
“My responsibility is to go there and give my best. I always try to do everything possible to help the team. Wherever the coach wants me to play, I’m ready,” he said.
While maintaining his open-minded approach, Awaziem acknowledged that his favoured position remains central defence.
“At this moment, my preferred role is centre-back, and I would like to continue there. However, whatever decision the coach makes, I am fully prepared,” he said.
The Super Eagles are continuing preparations for the AFCON tournament in Morocco, with the squad aiming to mount a strong challenge as Nigeria pursues continental success.
