AC Milan v Como Serie A Clash Could Make History with Potential Move to Australia

AC Milan’s upcoming Serie A fixture against newly promoted Como in February could break new ground as the first European top-flight league match to be staged outside the continent, with Perth, Australia emerging as the proposed host city.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed on Thursday that it has given a favourable response to the idea, describing the potential event as a “historic trip” for Italian football. However, the plan still faces significant regulatory hurdles and requires the green light from multiple governing bodies, including FIFA, UEFA, Football Australia, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

While the FIGC expressed optimism, it acknowledged the approval process is “complex” and far from guaranteed.

FIFA currently prohibits domestic league games from being played outside their home territories. However, the global body launched a working group last year to explore the possibility of such fixtures in the future.

This isn’t the first time a major European league has attempted to go global. La Liga previously eyed Miami as the venue for a high-profile clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, though the plan was shelved due to scheduling issues. A similar proposal in 2019 to hold a Barcelona vs Girona match in the U.S. also fell through after facing resistance from Spain’s football authorities and players’ union.

The English Premier League, meanwhile, has consistently ruled out taking league matches abroad, despite past discussions about a potential “39th game.”

If approved, the Milan–Como match could set a new precedent for globalising European club football in official league competition.
