Former Super Eagles striker Anthony Ujah has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34, ending a 15-year career, Sport360NG reports.

Ujah made the revelation in an emotional Instagram post on Friday, stating that he is stepping away from the sport with immediate effect.

“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football,” he wrote. “Football has been more than a game for me; it has been my passion, my identity, my home. I will truly miss the emotions, the atmosphere, the dressing room laughter, the celebrations, and even the hard days that made the good ones sweeter.”

The Nigerian forward spent the bulk of his career in Germany and had been without a club since leaving Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv in July, following an injury-hit season. Ujah made only five appearances for the Bulgarian team, scoring twice after missing 40 matches due to a knee injury.

Ujah is particularly celebrated for his time at FC Köln, where he played a key role in the club’s return to the Bundesliga. He is fondly remembered for his goal celebrations alongside the team’s goat mascot and for helping Köln lift the German 2. Bundesliga title in 2014, a highlight of his career.

Across his professional career, Ujah scored 113 goals and earned seven caps for Nigeria, though he did not score for the national team. Reflecting on his international career, he wrote, “Fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for my country is one I will forever live to cherish.”
