Bassey Credits Silva for Career Turnaround, Targets Bigger Impact Next Season
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has credited manager Marco Silva for playing a key role in his resurgence, describing himself as a dynamic centre-back who relishes pushing forward with the ball.
The Nigeria international, who recently clinched Fulham’s Player of the Season award for the 2024/25 campaign, reflected on his evolving playing style during the launch of his CB3 initiative at the Forest Gate Youth Centre, where he spent part of his childhood.
“I’m a centre-back who likes to make things happen. I enjoy stepping out of the back line and driving forward. My manager understands that and gives me the freedom to express myself. I want to leave an impact both in possession and without the ball,” said Bassey.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a stellar second season at Craven Cottage, making 35 league appearances as Fulham fought hard for a place in Europe. While the club narrowly missed out on continental qualification, Bassey was pleased with his personal development.
“My goal was never to win individual awards, it was simply to improve on last season. I think I’ve done that,” he told Sky Sports.
Central to that growth, Bassey said, was Silva’s belief in him. A key turning point came when the Portuguese coach moved him from the right side of central defence to his preferred left-footed position, unlocking his confidence and composure.
“It wasn’t about proving anyone wrong, it was about having my manager’s trust. That made the difference,” he said.
Bassey also praised Silva’s managerial acumen, insisting the Fulham boss doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
“He’s easily one of the most underrated managers in the Premier League. I believe he’ll be managing at the very top before long,” he added.
Off the pitch, Bassey is also making moves. Through the newly launched Calvin Bassey Collective, based at the Forest Gate Youth Centre, he hopes to inspire and support young people in his community.
“I grew up around here. I know what it’s like. If a kid like me from Forest Gate can do it, then so can they,” Bassey said.
With the new season approaching, the enterprising defender is setting the bar higher. After netting twice last term, he’s aiming to add more goals to his game.
“I’ve got five goals in mind for next season minimum,” he declared confidently.
